Øystein Birkeland has throughout the years practiced as a chamber musician and soloist in a broad range of musical genres. He has performed together with orchestras such as the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, Moscow Radio’s Symphony Orchestra, the St. Petersburg Philharmonic and the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, under conductors such as Vladimir Fedoseev, Iona Brown, Juri Bashmet, and Jukka Pekka Sasraste. Birkeland har collaborated with several composers in the creation of new works, among them Rolf Wallin, Ragnar Søderlind, Nils Henrik Asheim and Jon Øivind Ness. Birkeland was awarded the ‘Performer of the Year’ award in 1995 by the Norwegian Society of Composers based on his commitment to contemporary music. Among Birkeland's many CD recordings are Wallin's Ground together with The Norwegian Chamber Orchestra, Ragnar Søderlind's cello concert with Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra and Jon Øivind Ness's Wet Blubber Soup with the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra. This CD won the Norwegian award ‘Spellemannprisen’ for 2009.
