Bergen Domkor (Bergen Cathedral Choir), soloists and a baroque orchestra perform the cantata Erschallet, ihr Lieder, erklinget ihr Saiten! by Johann Sebastian Bach during the service in Bergen Cathedral on Pentecost Sunday.
Bach composed over 200 cantatas for use in Sunday services. Ring out, you songs; sound, you strings!, composed for Whit Sunday (Pentecost), was performed for the first time in the Weimar palace church on 20 May 1714. Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit descended to the apostles, is referred to as the birthday of the Christian church, and the cantata is a grandiose celebration of this day. Bach himself is said to have been particularly pleased with the work.
Bergen Cathedral Choir led by cantor Kjetil Almenning is considered one of Norway’s foremost chamber choirs. In addition to giving frequent concerts in Bergen, the choir also tours within the diocese and further afield. To perform Bach’s Cantata 172 they are joined by eminent soloists and a baroque orchestra.
