Due to illness, Andreas Conrad was forced to resign from the title role in the Bergen International Festival opening performance of Oedipus Rex. After a few nerve-wracking days a new King Oedipus has been found.
The title role will now be performed by Canadian Gordon Gietz, who is currently singing at the Cologne opera.
The tenor Andreas Conrad fell ill one week before the 25 May premiere. Oedipus Rex is a co-production between Den Nye Opera and the Bergen International Festival.
– To lose the lead performer so close to the premiere is obviously very dramatic. Director of Den Nye Opera Mary Miller and I have worked around the clock these past days to find a replacement. King Oedipus is a demanding role and one that not many performers have in their repertoire, but Gietz was willing to learn it over the weekend, says Festival director Per Boye Hansen, who describes Gietz as a sought-after, experienced singer.
Director Eirik Stubø and conductor Baldur Brönnimann traveled to Germany on Saturday to work with Gietz, between his Friday and Sunday performances in Cologne. On Monday morning he travels to Bergen.
Gordon Gietz made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera last year with the lead role in Schostakovitch’s The Nose. The performance was rated by both New York Magazine and Time Out New York as one of the top ten classical music events of 2010
The festival receives government grants from:Arts Council Norway, City of Bergen and Hordaland county.
