World premiere by composer Knut Vaage, author and lyricist Frode Grytten and video artist Anne Marthe Dyvi.
Bergen Big Band's purpose is to deliver freshly composed, innovative music that pushes boundaries. For this world premiere, the jazz ensemble collaborates with contemporary classical composer Knut Vaage to explore what lies at the intersection between the New Music genre and modern, experimental jazz music. The piece has been named Røter (Roots).
Partly based on the band members' own thoughts about their musical roots, the piece is further expanded with integrated text and video art by musical lyricist Frode Grytten and poetic video artist Anne Marthe Dyvi. The concert also reflects on what happens to people who wander and how roots are torn up or sprout back into life.
Bergen Big Band is Norway's only professional large jazz ensemble with full big band instrumentation. It consists of some of Bergen and the surrounding area's best jazz musicians and a few versatile musicians from the Royal Norwegian Naval Forces' Band and the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra.
