Mari Kalkun
Atmospheric solo concert with contemporary folk songs from Estonia.
Estonian folk music is being rediscovered in Europe, and central to its revival is Mari Kalkun.
The folk musician hails from Võru in south-east Estonia, and her compositions are a love letter of sound to her home country, its misty landscape and traditional music.
She performs with vocals inspired by runic songs and accompanies herself on traditional kannel, piano and various instruments. Several lyrics are written by Estonian poets and tell stories about farming life, forests and hills in Võru.
Mari Kalkun says that singing in her mother tongue is the only way to fully express herself as a musician.
"Gentle, dignified and utterly beautiful. As a singer, writer and instrumentalist, Kalkun is a musician whose work is a jewel in the crown of the rich Estonian scene." – SONGLINES
