Canadian Frédérick Gravel is known for turning the structures of choreography upside down and often includes elements of rock and performance art in his expression. His background is from the vibrant arts community in Montreal, and he has established himself as one of the foremost exponents of the new, Canadian dance art. Now he will create a new performance for Carte Blanche, the Norwegian national company of contemporary dance.
But Then, We’ll Disappear (I’d Prefer Not To) was scheduled for a world premiere during the 2020 Bergen International Festival, but had to be post-poned due to Covid-19. The new date for the world premiere is Thursday 27 May, with rehearsals beginning in spring.
For Gravel, the performance is only first created in the meeting between people. The stage becomes an arena for an artistic and social experiment where characters are built and erased.
‘I view a choreographic idea as a melody, and my works can be compared to making a concert. I make music by the aid of dance. One might say that I compose lines that the dancers perform with their own voice, in their own key,’ he says.

Events planned for the 2021 Bergen International Festival will be launched throughout the autumn and winter.
It is likely that plans for the 2021 Bergen International Festival will be affected by the pandemic. By launching performances and artists as they are confirmed, the Festival would like to draw attention to the work our wonderful artists do, while knowing that the final festival programme may look different. The festival will follow the health authorities’ orders and recommendations, and wants to create safe conditions and the least possible inconvenience to our audience. Therefore, ticket sales will not start until the spring.
