Thanks to a small block of wood, Åshild Kanstad Johnsen has become one of Norway’s most successful illustrators.

The award-winning author, illustrator and visual artist Åshild Kanstad Johnsen (born 1978 in Bergen) debuted as a children's book author with the picture book Kubbe Lager MuseumÅrets vakreste Bøker (This year’s most beautiful books)-awards in Norway in 2011, and the title character has since become the protagonist in a book series published around the world, as well as in Japanese cartoons. In Japan, there has also been made spinoff products related to the cartoons. Johnsen, who has stated that she enjoys drawing, cutting, pasting, and collecting all kinds of strange things in her spare time, guests the Bergen International Festival's online version with a performance based on the book Kubbe lager spetakkel (Block Makes a Commotion).
