A closer look at Bergen’s brightest musical star

Leif Ove Andsnes was born on the island of Karmøy in 1970, and started his career by studying at Bergen's Music Conservatory in 1986 with the famous Czech professor Jirí Hlinka as his teacher. During his studies, Andsnes’ career made some rapid turns, leading to the release of his debut album in 1987. The following year, Andsnes won the 2nd prize at the Eurovision's competition for young musicians in Amsterdam, and two weeks later he became the youngest soloist ever to perform Grieg's a-minor concerto during the Bergen International Festival. In the wake of this, Andsnes began to arouse interest in other parts of the world, and the young pianist made his American debut in New York in 1989, followed by several concerts in the US and Canada.
