  • This Is Not A Container. This Is A Portal.

November 18, 2020

Tired of not being able to travel anywhere? During the Festival, you can meet people from all over the world in a golden portal in Bergen city centre.

Update 26 March 2021: This event has been postponed and will not take place during the 2021 Festival as previously announced. Updated details for the event will be announced in connection with the programme release for the 2022 Bergen International Festival.

Closed borders. Quarantine. Red, yellow and green countries. Stay at home. The last year hasn't exactly given us great travel experiences.

During the Festival, you'll have the opportunity to meet new people in other countries, without the quarantine, in the Bergen_Portal.

Inside – alone or with a small group – you'll leave your own world. You will meet people face to face, as if you were in the same room – even though thousands of miles separate you.

The portal is linked to an identical portal somewhere else in the world. There are portals in public places in Mexico City, New York, Lagos, Erbil and some thirty other sites. Some of the portals are set up permanently, while others pop up for a shorter period, like during the Bergen International Festival.

In the portal, there will be open meetings and also curated connections with prearranged content. How about a dinner across the continents? An improvised mini-jam with musicians in different countries? The themes revolve around art, sustainability and entrepreneurship, but it is also possible to simply strike up a conversation with a person who is far beyond your own circle of acquaintances. Stay tuned to fib.no as the programme takes shape during the spring.

The concept was created by Shared_Studios, in order to form meaningful human encounters between people separated by distance and inequalities.

Bergen_Portal was originally planned for the 2020 edition of the Bergen International Festival, but was postponed until 2021 due to the corona pandemic.

Bergen_Portal is sponsored by DNB.

By launching performances and artists as they are confirmed, the Festival would like to draw attention to the work our wonderful artists do, though the pandemic may cause numerous changes to the final festival programme.
