Cornerteateret – industrial history meets new performing arts

Cornerteateret is one of the venues for music and performing arts that hosts performances during the Bergen International Festival. Since its opening in 2013, the theatre has been an important part of the performing arts scene in Bergen. The theatre is located on Marineholmen at Møhlenpris, in an over 130-year-old green wooden building that was once Mjellem & Karlsen's Mechanical Workshop & Dry Dock.

Here, where large iron steamships were once built for all the world's oceans, new theatre, dance and opera performances are now being created.

From shipyard workshop to theatre

It was precisely on Marineholmen that Bergen's shipbuilding industry was established towards the end of the 1800s. But when the shipyards were eventually closed down, the green building was left as the last remaining industrial activity in the area.

Despite poor maintenance, the large wooden building had retained much of its authentic character with original building details and a distinctive load-bearing structure with solid wooden beams – as if it had been created to house performing arts, thought enthusiasts in the Bergen theatre community. The result was a completely unique theatre where old timber walls surround modern features. Cornerteateret opened on 7 September 2013 and was awarded the City of Bergen's Architecture and Urban Design Award the same year.

The place for innovative performing arts

Close to art in two black box theatres

Cornerteateret consists of, among other things, two black box theatres on the ground floor. These theatres are flexible spaces without a fixed stage setup, where performing artists can create experiences adapted to each individual performance.

Here, the audience can experience theatre, dance and performance up close, often with the audience placed around the action itself.

Cornerbaren – a meeting place for culture at Møhlenpris

Here, you will also find Cornerbaren, which has become a natural gathering place for culture enthusiasts and the performing arts community in Bergen. Here, the audience can meet before and after performances, and relax on the outdoor terrace that is open on sunny days.

How to get to Cornerteateret?

Cornerteateret's address

Cornerteateret is located at Kong Christian Frederiks plass 4, 5006 Bergen, on Marineholmen in the district of Møhlenpris. The area is located a quarter of an hour's walk from Bergen city centre and is accessible on foot.

Transport to the Cornerteateret

The nearest stop is Møhlenpris or the Florida bus stop, or the light rail stop Florida, both of which are a 7-minute walk from Cornerteateret. Cornerteateret is also a 15-minute walk from stops in the city centre, a pleasant walk over Nygårdshøyden and through the district of Møhlenpris. Parking at Marineholmen

Do you need to drive? There are public parking options in the area around Marineholmen with the Sesam parking app. Cars can be driven up to the theatre for delivering and collecting those with reduced mobility. Please note that parking capacity in the area may be limited, so we recommend planning well in advance or using public transport.

For wheelchair users

Cornerteateret has a universal design on the ground floor with wheelchair access to all theatres. The theatre is well adapted for audiences with reduced mobility. Cars can be driven up to the theatre for delivering and collecting passengers.

Adapted facilities

Cornerteateret has an easily accessible disabled restroom on the ground floor. The building is adapted with universal design on the floor where the Festival's performances take place.
