Classic YouTube phenomenon.
Few people celebrate their 29th birthday in front of 13,000 people, but that is how Japanese pianist and composer Hayato Sumino spent his big day this summer. The classical artist performed at the massive Budokan arena in Tokyo, marking the finale of a tour consisting of 24 sold-out concerts across Japan.
Sumino’s artistic signature merges classical virtuosity, innovative arrangements and improvisation. On his YouTube channel, Cateen, which boasts over 1.3 million subscribers and 170 million views, he publishes original compositions and arrangements. He performs Twinkle Twinkle Little Star at seven skill levels, seamlessly incorporate the sound of a ringing phone from the audience into an improvised duet, and present his own interpretations of classical works.
Sumino gained international recognition during the 2021 International Chopin Piano Competition, and this winter, he made his international recording debut. At Troldsalen, he will perform several pieces from this album. Alongside his own music, the programme includes Ravel’s Boléro and works by Ryuichi Sakamoto, Chopin, and Bach.
