Winterreise recontextualized.
When star accordionist Ksenija Sidorova joins world opera star Thomas Hampson on stage, a profundity and playfulness springs out from the unusual partnership. The verve, style, attitude and virtuosity of accordionist Ksenija Sidorova meets the poise and eloquence of Thomas Hampson, the baritone with a voice ‘so rich it can circle the earth’ (Good Morning America).
This unlikely union juxtaposes excerpts from one of the great song-cycles of the classical repertoire with tangos, dances and protest songs from the twentieth century.
Franz Schubert’s Winterreise is the consummate classical song cycle – a moving, embracing journey in song that reflects on the suffering and bravery of the individual following an unexplained loss. With its roots in folk music, Winterreise is ripe for conversion from voice and piano to voice and accordion – an instrument which, in Sidorova’s hands, offers countless new perspectives on Schubert’s miniature masterpieces.
After an abridged version of Winterreise, Hampson and Sidorova kick back with a series of infectious musical songs and dances from the breadth of the twentieth-century. Argentinean tangos, musical numbers and protest songs rub shoulders with songs by Kurt Weill made famous by Billie Holliday and Barbara Streisand. An evening brimming with artistry and atmosphere – and a few surprises – is guaranteed.
