Folk and chamber music on Hardanger instruments.
Musician and instrument maker Ottar Kåsa has created the Hardanger viola and the Hardanger cello – two new instruments where the distinctive Hardanger fiddle sound, with sympathetic strings, is adapted into other string instruments.
‘The music is newly composed, interspersed with arrangements of traditional Hardanger fiddle tunes, and navigates the boundaries between folk music and chamber music,’ says Vegar Vårdal, who is the main composer of the work Istem.
On Wednesday 3 June, the same day as the quartet performs the whole work in Troldsalen at Edvard Grieg’s Troldhaugen, they first appear at the Festival square in the city centre. Here, audience can hear excerpts from the evening concert, free and open for all.
