Festival square
Springtime at the Festival square.
A masterful encounter awaits as star soprano Mari Eriksmoen and pianist Christian Grøvlen open this year’s Festival square with music by Edvard Grieg. They have selected some of their favourite works by Grieg, conjuring The Last Spring and beloved songs from the song cycle Haugtussa (The Mountain Maid).
Eriksmoen’s crystal-clear voice and versatile musicianship have made her a highly sought-after soprano on Europe’s leading opera and concert stages. Grøvlen is a distinguished pianist with a deep connection to Norwegian classical music, particularly Agathe Backer Grøndahl – the first to perform Haugtussa in its entirety in concert – as well as Harald Sæverud, and Edvard Grieg.
Mari Eriksmoen also appears at the Festival in Mahler’s 2nd together with this year’s Artist in Residence, Esa-Pekka Salonen, and the Festival musicians of the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra. Christian Grøvlen can also be heard in a solo recital at Håkonshallen during this year’s Festival.
From Thursday 28 May to Sunday 7 June, the Festival square will be filled with activities both on stage and across the square.
