Assistentkirkegården
Lungegårdsbakken 7
At the cemetery Assistentkirkegården in Bergen, many people who have been of importance to the city are buried. During the 2026 Bergen International Festival, the cemetery will become a venue for the walking theatre performance Hvem er vi? Historier fra seks fot under (Who are we? Stories from six feet under).
The cemetery Assistentkirkegården is located between the city gate Stadsporten and the bay Store Lungegårdsvann, and as a park area it has a unique collection of old trees. The cemetery was established in 1837. During its development, a whale skeleton was discovered from when Alrekstadvågen was a seabed, and the skeleton is now housed at the University Museum of Bergen.
Ole Bull, a superstar in his time, is buried in the cemetery next to Eidsvoll representative Fredrik Meltzer. Edvard Grieg was also originally buried here, before his urn was moved to Troldhaugen. At the burial site, you will also find well-known family names in Bergen. However, the cemetery also contains many cholera victims, both impoverished and in some cases unidentified, from the mid-19th century.
Assistentkirkegården was closed as a burial ground in 1919, but some family graves are permanent, and the most recent burial took place as recently as 2023.
