Tristan and Isolde from medieval novel to modern myth.

Olivier Messiaen’s Turangalîla Symphony is a central part of the Festival’s opening concert and is a work inspired by the medieval tale of Tristan and Isolde. In connection with the performance, Anders Kristian Strand, Associate Professor at the University of Bergen, will give a lecture on this myth in past and present.

What are the myth’s literary sources, and which lasting traces have they made in our emotional lives? How did Tristan and Isolde compare with other famous lovers? And how did it come about that Richard Wagner’s epoch-making opera of 1865 transformed the material into a modern myth and a permanent media event?

Painting: Tristan and Isolde with the Potion, by John William Waterhouse (circa 1916)
